Situated 29km south of Narrogin and only 17km north of Wagin. The farm gate is 300 metres from the recently upgraded Great Southern Highway. Access is from a side local road on a right hand bend 80 metres past the historic Barton Hotel which is undergoing a renovation. In 1860's early settlers came to the area to graze their flocks, but official records of it began in 1889 when the Great Southern Railway opened and a siding called Buchanan River was opened. In 1897 the Government set aside land for sub division and in 1903 lots were surveyed and the town of Buchanan gazetted. The land agent at Kattaning reported considerable interest, and a hall, school and other facilities had been completed by 1904. The name clashed with a NSW town so it was renamed Barton in 1905 to honor our 1st Prime Minister. Over next 20 years town underwent 4 more name changes.
