The normal answer is similar to ‘We love your home and would enjoy living here, but we don’t have anyone in the family with a disability’ It is not a disability purpose built home. As this isn’t such, we wont explain how or why but will share that it would have been many tens or thousands of dollars extra or even more. Because one of us is in a motorised wheelchair we chose to ensure that every room was accessible, as is the outside. This home is a unique layout with large rooms, open plan and easy flow. It would suit a family, retirees, professional/s or entertainers. We bought this home brand new, as we were from interstate, we knew nothing about the property when we bought the house, we could just see the potential it had to make our forever home. The main bathroom had a bath sitting there and although the plumbing is there it wouldn’t have fit for that particular bath to be completed. Additionally it had a big crack in it. The bath was therefore removed to the garden as part of the landscaping below the stairs. The plumbing is still there for the next owner should they wish to have a bath in the large bathroom. The toilet is European and has moveable arms and a comfort for anyone. Some, perhaps a large person may wish to move an arm out of the way, its whatever the user decides, its that simple. There are four bedrooms, we decided that every room would be used. Thus we have our bedroom, the guest room, a library and a study. For a family they may decide to use all the bedrooms as bedrooms. The large dining room could be a study, playroom or even a library. In the open plan kitchen a large kitchen/dining room table could be added and between the large walk-in pantry and the door to the garage, a modern narrow, long desk could be added, or a settee. The long large verandah accessible from the kitchen or the laundry overlooks the small courtyard and out of view, the utility areas, a great alfresco, informal dining and relaxing. Its quite high at the back, is fully fenced and has a child proof lock for everyone’s safety, and steps leading down to the courtyard below. Someone may decide to add a chair lift as we often see in advertising for seniors. We kept that in mind if ever needed. As you know the wheelchair user uses the metre wide path out the front door, through the gate into the fully fenced yard to access all parts of the garden or the utility areas, and its easy to push a laundry trolley too. The main ‘back yard’ is to the side of the house and is currently mostly used for the growing of fruit and veggies. The backyard/utility areas also include a garden shed, 2 water tanks and a greenhouse. There is great storage under the house, one section could even become a wine cellar with a bit of work. The property is fully landscaped and provides shade in the summer and winter sun access too, loads of simple plantings and colour and of course there is room for the next owners to make it theirs too or just maintain as is, purely their choice of course. We have two small dogs and there is room for children’s play things too. Its situated in a long street, the end is a large court. At the beginning of the street is a park with a playground. Its a quiet and peaceful street, every home has either children living or visiting sometime and there are many professionals, families and retirees residing here too. Of course it may fit someone with a disability too but disability is unique and each person has to look at changes to fit their individual needs, as well as other members of the family.
