History of Belmont Within the hills and creeks of Belmont, the local native people camp and hunt. Andrew Petrie reported the existence of fine timber, and the name of Mount Petrie is taken from him. The suburb was named after the Built-house that was built by Colonel August Bernecker approximately in 1860. 5th of June 1876 marks the opening of Belmont State School, although it currently lies within the borders of Carindale.
