History of Panton Hill Initially named Kingstown, the region grew in inhabitants during the Victorian discovery of gold in the mid-1850s since explorers investigated the mountains surrounding the place known as the Caledonia Goldfields. It must have been named after Joseph Anderson Panton, a judge that spent most of his spare time surveying the Yarra Valley. Panton Hill Postal Service first opened its doors on October 1, 1875. Panton Hill Primary School, 1134, was initially a two-room structure with the Headmaster's home next.
